Rezoning Continues Through Public Review Process; Likely To
Increase South Village Development Pressure
 Trinity Realty’s proposed rezoning of Hudson Square to allow, for the first time, as-of-right residential development, continues through the public review process. Because of the proposed allowance for highly-profitable residential development, the rezoning is expected to increase development in Hudson Square, and increase development pressure upon the neighboring South Village. Trinity’s own environmental review for the proposed rezoning found it would have a “significant adverse impact” on the proposed South Village Historic District, which the Landmarks Preservation Commission in the same document called “landmark eligible.”; And yet the Commission continues to refuse to landmark the area.
In recent years, the City has approved several developer-requested rezonings in the area (NYU, Rudin, Peter Moore, and now Trinity, Realty, for ex.) while continuing to refuse to even hold a hearing on the proposed landmark designation of this section of the South Village.
The Community Board will be voting on October 18th on its resolution regarding the Hudson Square rezoning. GVSHP is urging the Community Board to make clear in its resolution that the Hudson Square Rezoning MUST be accompanied by landmark protections for the South Village if it is to move ahead.
