Call Borough President Stringer Today and Ask Him to Vote ‘NO’ on NYU Plan

WITH JUST TWO WEEKS TO GO BEFORE BOROUGH PRESIDENT STRINGER MUST ISSUE HIS RECOMMENDATION REGARDING NYU’S MASSIVE PROPOSED VILLAGE EXPANSION PLAN, PLEASE CALL HIS OFFICE TODAY AND URGE HIM TO VOTE ‘NO.’

  • Call 212/669-8300, AND TELL BP STRINGER TO VOTE ‘NO’ ON THE NYU 2031 PLAN BECAUSE:
    • IT WOULD HAVE A DEVASTATING IMPACT ON THE VILLAGE
    • IT’S NOT RIGHT TO GIVE AWAY PUBLIC LAND, OVERTURN NEIGHBORHOOD ZONING PROTECTIONS, AND UNDO THE TERMS UNDER WHICH NYU WAS GIVEN THE LAND THEY NOW OWN IN THE FIRST PLACE
    • THERE ARE ALTERNATIVE LOCATIONS FOR THEIR EXPANSION THAT ARE BETTER FOR NYC AND FOR THE UNIVERSITY, SUCH AS THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT, THAT NYU REFUSES TO CONSIDER

Please ask friends and neighbors to do the same – FORWARD THIS E-MAIL!

NYU 2031 Press ConferenceUpdate on NYU:  Last week, more than 150 community leaders from Hell’s Kitchen to Lower Manhattan, along with representatives of NYU faculty, students, and tenants held a press conference on the steps of City Hall calling upon Borough President Stringer to hold a public hearing and to vote ‘NO’ on the NYU Village Expansion Plan application currently under his review.  The press conference sent an undeniable message of the breadth and depth of opposition to the plan.  See video of the press conference HERE, photos HERE and read the press release with statements from participating organizations HERE; you can also see coverage on Channel 5 News, The Villager, and in the NY Times.

GVSHP also delivered nearly 2,500 petition signatures to the Borough President urging him to vote ‘NO’ on the NYU plan (click HERE to add your name).

GVSHP followed the press conference with a letter co-signed by nearly fifty representatives of community groups from throughout Lower Manhattan, representatives of NYU faculty, workers, students, and tenants of NYU housing, downtown political leaders, and preservation organizations calling on the Borough President to vote ‘NO’ – read the letter HERE.

While the Borough President’s vote is only advisory, it can have an important impact on the process.  That is why GVSHP and organizations representing the NYU community and the broader downtown community wrote to Borough President Stringer in February urging him to hold a public hearing before making his decision on the NYU plan, as he did for the Columbia expansion plan and other land use
applications (read the letter HERE); the Borough President has thus far not scheduled a hearing.
