NYU 40-Story Hotel Public Meeting June 21
 Community Board 2 will hold a public ‘forum and discussion’ on NYU’s proposal to build a 40-story hotel — the tallest building in Greenwich Village — on Bleecker Street between LaGuardia Place and Mercer Street in the Silver Towers complex as part of its NYU 2031 Expansion Plan. The meeting will be at 6:30 P.M. at 75 Morton Street (at Greenwich Street).
NYU’s plan for a 40-story hotel at this site requires Landmarks approval because GVSHP was able to secure landmark designation for the I.M. Pei-designed Silver Towers complex in 2008. While this and all of NYU’s other development proposals for the ‘core’ of the Village also require extensive zoning changes, the sale of city-owned land to NYU, and the lifting of deed restrictions on formerly city-owned land now owned by NYU, the university must first seek Landmarks approval before they can move ahead with any of these other approval processes.
Approval for a 40-story tower on open space within a landmarked development would be unprecedented. Community Board #1, representing the Financial District, has urged NYU to consider locating its 40-story tower in their neighborhood, where development of this scale is not only welcomed but needed. NYU has thus far refused to consider this option.
NYU will not formally file its application for the 40-story tower with the Landmarks Preservation Commission until the fall, at which point Community Board #2’s Landmarks Committee will hold a public hearing on the proposal and pass a resolution. The meeting on the 21st is a preliminary discussion and presentation of NYU’s proposal. YOU ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND AND EXPRESS YOUR VIEWS ON THE PROPOSAL.
