NYU Landmark Application for Changes to Silver Towers
 After dropping plans for adding a 400 ft tall tower, NYU has proposed some new changes to the landmarked Silver Towers complex as part of their twenty-year expansion plan. While some of the changes are relatively modest and benign, such as restoring some original outdoor lighting, others have more far-reaching implications.
NYU is seeking landmarks approval to build a dog run and playground within the landmarked Silver Towers complex a few yards behind the Picasso ‘Sylvette’ sculpture; they are doing this because they are seeking to take possession of the public land upon which a dog run and playground are currently found on Mercer Street in order to accommodate a massive, nearly 1 million sq. ft. new building they plan for the site of the adjacent Coles Gym. GVSHP opposes NYU’s plan to take the public land which would eliminate the dog run and playground where they are currently located, but also opposes making changes to the landmarked Silver Towers design to accommodate NYU's plans because they would violate the integrity of the complex's modernist design (see details of the proposal HERE).
GVSHP was able to secure landmark status for Silver Towers in 2008. NYU’s application will be heard by the Landmarks Preservation Commission next Tuesday, April 5.
