Big Turnout for Save the South Village Rally

Scores of neighbors, parents, and preservationists joined GVSHP and Councilmember Margaret Chin on Sunday for our Rally to Save the South Village. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all the community groups which co-sponsored the rally. We called upon the City to move on promised landmark designation of the neighborhood immediately, citing current threats to buildings at Thompson and Spring Streets and at the Children’s Aid Society, and showed what a development on the Children’s Aid Society site could look like without landmark designation. See the press release HERE, watch the video of the event HERE, see images from the rally HERE, and see coverage from NY1 News and The Villager.

GVSHP has been fighting to secure landmark designation for the South Village since 2002, submitting a formal district designation proposal in 2006. Last year the City designated the first third of the proposed district, but has stalled on its promised consideration of the remaining two-thirds.
