South Village Preservation Updates

  • South Village Celebration and Rally — Thank you to all who attended our celebration and rally calling for landmark designation of the remainder of the South Village at St. Anthony’s Church on June 24th. If you missed it, or would like to see pictures, video, or a PowerPoint presentation from the event showing which South Village buildings have now been landmarked, which are yet to be landmarked, and which were lost or altered while awaiting action by the city, CLICK HERE.

  • The city’s official ‘designation report’ for the South Village Historic District Phase I (aka Greenwich Village Historic District Extension II) is now available on-line HERE. The designation report is very important because it guides how the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) will regulate and ensure the preservation of the area, by identifying the important features of the neighborhood and each individual building. The designation report cites GVSHP’s reports “The South Village: A Proposal for Historic District Designation” and “The Italians of the South Village” as sources for its findings; GVSHP worked hard over the last several years to document and demonstrate to the LPC the vital historic significance of this area.

  • GVSHP used the occasion of the LPC’s recent move toward landmarking Mill’s House No.3 in Midtown — an early example of reform housing — to remind the LPC that the South Village is actually chock full of early and significant examples of reform housing and other sites related to efforts to improve the living conditions of poor and working-class New Yorkers a century ago.  This includes Mill’s House No.1 at 160 Bleecker Street, one of the first such examples anywhere in New York City, which predates Mill’s House No.3 by more than 10 years. Read the letter HERE.
