An application has been filed for approval for a new building within the South Village extension of the Greenwich Village Historic District which GVSHP proposed and secured approval of in 2010. The 
new 5-story building would be an expansion of the existing IFC Film Center on a vacant lot on Cornelia Street located behind the theater’s Sixth Avenue building.
Because the proposed new structure is located within a designated historic district, the plan must go through a public hearing and review process at the Community Board and the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), and can only proceed if the LPC decides the design of the building is aesthetically “appropriate” for the site and district. If approved by the LPC, this particular proposal will also require zoning variances regarding the use and shape of the building; those will require an additional public hearing and review process which would follow later at the Community Board and the Board of Standards and Appeals.
GVSHP has met with the applicant and helped connect IFC to other neighbors and local stakeholders before the application was filed. The Society has also already begun the process of providing some feedback about the design, which we continue to review as the public hearing process begins. The application will be presented at the upcoming Community Board #2 Landmarks Committee meeting on Wednesday, September 16th in the Assembly Hall of Judson Memorial Church at 239 Thompson Street (West 3rd/Washington Square South). The meeting begins at 6:30 and this is the first item scheduled to be heard. There the public can find out more about the proposal and provide feedback to the applicant and the Community Board, which will submit a formal recommendation to the LPC.
