Landmark the South Village/Don’t “Midtown” Hudson Square

Hudson SquareWe have some important progress to report and updates on the fight to preserve the South Village and prevent the “Midtowning” of Hudson Square.

First, we are pleased to report  that Community Board #2 voted to recommend denial of the proposed Hudson Square Rezoning UNLESS the proposed South Village Historic District  is landmarked and modest reductions are made in the rezoning’s proposed height limits for new development in Hudson Square, among other changes (read their full resolution HERE). The South Village would likely experience increased development pressure and an accelerated rate of destruction if the Hudson Square rezoning were passed without enacting these landmark protections (promised by the City years ago but never delivered).

The proposed rezoning now goes to Borough President Stringer. GVSHP and allied community groups have written to the Borough President urging him to recommend disapproval of the Hudson Square Rezoning unless landmark protections are granted for the neighboring South Village, and substantial reductions are made in the rezoning’s proposed height AND bulk limits for new development (read the letter HERE).  South Village

The Borough President must issue his recommendations in the next few weeks. The City Planning Commission will then hold a public hearing and vote upon the proposal, followed by the City Council. The Commission and the Council must both approve the rezoning in order for it to be enacted, and can make amendments to the plan as well. The Commission’s public hearing is tentatively scheduled for the day of November 28th, so please hold that date on your calendar.

HOW TO HELP:

In case you missed it before Sandy struck, GVSHP released a new video in our Save the South Village campaign by Murray’s Cheese proprietor and South Village resident Rob Kaufelt; view it here:
