Final Public Hearing on Revised Plans

On Tuesday, July 15th, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) will hold its final public hearing on the revised plans by Rudin Management for development of the St. Vincent’s Hospital East Campus, and for St. Vincent’s hardship application to demolish the O’Toole building to construct its new hospital on the site. THIS IS THE PUBLIC’S FINAL SCHEDULED OPPORTUNITY TO TESTIFY ON THESE PLANS BEFORE THE LANDMARKS PRESERVATION COMMISSION.
Both of these applications are extremely important. This is the first landmarks hardship case in New York City in nearly 20 years, and the results will likely set a precedent for future cases. The plan for the East Campus is one of the largest and most prominent developments planned in Greenwich Village in decades.
GVSHP has already testified regarding the proposed East Campus plan, and will be testifying regarding the hardship application. While we recognize the extreme importance of the services St. Vincent’s provides, we also deeply value the landmarks regulations protecting the Village and much of our city. Hardship exemptions to these protections must only be granted if all other reasonable alternatives have truly been explored and exhausted, and if the legal definition of hardship has truly been met.
To assist with the public’s understanding of the new proposals, GVSHP has created side-by-side visual images of the existing conditions, the prior proposal, and the current proposals for the East Campus and comparisons of the new and prior proposal for the new hospital on the site of the O’Toole Building.
