Hundreds Left Out in the Cold At Final City Council St. Vincent’s/Rudin Hearing

St. VincentsYesterday, hundreds turned out for the one and only scheduled City Council hearing on the Rudin rezoning and condo development plan for the St. Vincent’s East Campus.  However, the room in which the City Council chose to hold the hearing only held 40 people, with just one other overflow room holding about 70 additional people.  As a result, hundreds were left standing out in the cold on the street for hours, waiting for their turn to be let into the building to attend the hearing and testify.  Unfortunately, many could not wait (or tolerate the cold), and had to leave before they were ever able to attend or participate in the only City Council public hearing before they vote on this plan.

GVSHP and many other organizations and individuals were fortunately able to speak, and urge the City Council not to approve an upzoning that would give special zoning considerations originally intended for a hospital to a private condo development.  See GVSHP’s testimony HERE and coverage on NY1 News HERE.

The City Council Zoning Subcommittee did not vote at yesterday’s meeting, but will soon.  Their vote will be followed by a vote of the Land Use Committee, and then the full City Council, which must take place before March 28th.  As the Borough President and the City Planning Commission have already voted to approve the zoning changes, the City Council’s approval is the final one needed for the rezoning to take effect.

While yesterday’s public hearing provided the one limited opportunity for public comment to the City Council, there is still time to contact councilmembers before they vote.
