Public Meeting on City's 'Tech Hub Plan Wed. June 14 - East Village Residents Please Attend!
Community Board #3 (East Village/Lower East Side) will receive a presentation from the City regarding plans for a “Tech Hub” to be built on the site of the city-owned PC Richards at 120 E. 14th Street (east of 4th Avenue). All interested in finding out more about this plan are encouraged to attend, but those who live east of 4th Avenue (in Community Board #3) are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to speak at the meeting in support of needed zoning protections for the area east of 4th Avenue between Union Square and Astor Place.
The entire area between 5th and 3rd Avenues, Union Square and Astor Place, is facing overwhelming development pressure leading to 300 ft. tall towers and large-scale hotel and office development. This is due to (among other factors) growing interest by the tech industry in the area and a lack of appropriate zoning and/or landmark protections for the area.
The Mayor’s Tech Hub plan, if not accompanied by such protections, will make this bad situation exponentially worse. That is why it is critical that we urge Community Board #3 to insist that any Tech Hub plan be conditioned upon zoning protections for the residential area to the south, along 3rd and 4th Avenues.
If you care about this issue, please attend Tuesday, June 14 at 6:30 pm, University Settlement at Houston Street Center, 273 Bowery. IF YOU LIVE IN COMMUNITY BOARD #3 (east of 4th Avenue), WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO ALSO SPEAK AT THE MEETING (2 min. max). GVSHP will provide signs even if you do not speak, so your feelings about the need for neighborhood zoning protections will be known.
