Jane Jacobs School

GVSHP is supporting a community-initiated effort to have Greenwich Village’s new middle school, M.S. 297 at 75 Morton Street, named for Jane Jacobs.  Last week GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman spoke to Community Board #2 in support of the initiative, which would honor Jacob’s legacy and impact upon the Village.  An independent-minded community organizer who took on powerful interests, valued history and diversity, and taught us all that “the experts” don’t always know more than average citizens, especially when it comes to their own communities, we can’t think of a better namesake for a new school in our community.  Read more here.

In 2009, Hudson Street between Perry and West 11th Street in front of Jane Jacobs’ former home at 555 Hudson Street was co-named “Jane Jacobs Way” in honor of the pioneering preservation activist. GVSHP first proposed the street co-naming in 2006 shortly after Jacobs’ death. However, that is the only site in the Village or anywhere in New York City named for Jacobs.

Jacobs served as an early member of the GVSHP Board of Advisors after its founding in 1980, and generously conducted an oral history for GVSHP which is available through our website. In June, 2006, shortly after her death, GVSHP and the Center for the Living City held a public celebration of the life of Jane Jacobs in Washington Square Park.
