Round 1 Goes to Preservation at
85-89 Jane Street
!
Plan for 80-90 ft. Towers, Other Changes
Fails to Get Landmarks Approval

Yesterday the proposal for large-scale changes to 85-89 Jane Street (Washington/Greenwich Streets), including the addition of 80-90 ft. tall glass and concrete towers, failed to win approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. GVSHP strongly urged rejection of the proposal (testimony here), and we were joined at the hearing by other community groups and block associations, elected officials, and scores of neighbors. Read coverage of the hearing here.

The Commission pushed back hard on the proposed towers and other elements of the proposed additions and changes to the façade. The ball is now in the applicant’s court to come back with a revised proposal, if they chose, that will address the Commission’s concerns.

I want to thank everyone who attended yesterday’s hearing and other hearings on this proposal, and the hundreds of you who sent letters to the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Mayor expressing opposition to the proposal. Your support and participation made a difference!

The story is not over, however. We must remain vigilant, and may well need to come to more hearings and write more letters, if and when a new proposal is submitted. GVSHP will let you know as soon as that happens.

We still have much work to do, but today was a great victory for our efforts to preserve our neighborhood. Please see below for some other current landmarks applications in our neighborhood, and here or here for more information on 85-89 Jane Street.
