NYU Update: Sign the Petition, Images of NYU Plans Revealed, Important January Hearings

FooterWe have some very important updates for you as we head into the critical time in our fight against city approvals for NYU’s massive proposed 20 year expansion plan.

First, we are thrilled to report that in a very brief period of time, our on-line petition to city officials urging them to reject the NYU plan has garnered nearly 1,000 signatures!  If you have not already, please sign the petition HERE, and if you have, please pass it along to five friends and ask them to sign as well.

Second, GVSHP has poured through NYU’s application materials and found stunning images of the overwhelming massiveness of the new structures NYU would build if given the zoning changes, public land, and urban renewal deed restriction exemptions they are seeking.  Click on the image below to see some views of how large these new buildings would be in context, and click HERE and HERE to see the full NYU applications (warning: VERY large pdfs).

Finally, there will be several very important hearings and meetings in January on the NYU plan; it is critical that you attend if we are to stop the public approvals needed for it to go forward.  They are as follows:

  • Wednesday, January 4th, 6:30 pm, Town Hall Meeting on How to Fight the NYU Plan, at the AIA Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place (Bleecker/west 3rd Street).  GVSHP, GVBA, CAAN 2031, and more than a dozen other groups will co-sponsor the meeting to mobilize the public and let you know how you can fight the plan!
  • Monday, January 9th, 6:30 pm, CB 2 Zoning Committee, location tbd.  NYU will present its plans; the Zoning Committee will make recommendations to CB 2 regarding the zoning changes NYU is seeking to allow its plan to move ahead.  A STRONG TURNOUT AT THIS MEETING IS CRITICAL!
  • Thursday, January 12th, 6:30 pm, CB 2 Parks Committee, location tbd.  The Parks Committee will review NYU’s proposals to take over and build upon open space and green space and make recommendations to the CB 2.  A STRONG TUNROUT AT THIS MEETING IS CRITICAL!
  • There will also me meetings of the CB 2 Traffic and Transportation Committee on Tuesday Jan. 10, the Social Services and Education Committee on Tuesday Jan. 17, and the Environment Committee on Wednesday, Jan. 18.  If you are interested in the impact of the NYU plan on any of these areas, you are urged to attend these meetings.

During the next seven months the decisions will be made to determine whether or not NYU’s massive and misguided Village expansion plan will go forward.  We hope you’ll join us in fighting it!
