St. Vincent’s/Rudin Update
 Tuesday the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) also met regarding the St. Vincent’s/Rudin development proposals. The LPC voted, with three dissents, to finalize approval for St. Vincent’s hardship application to demolish the O’Toole Building and replace it with a new 286 ft. tall hospital. GVSHP had expressed considerable concerns about the hardship application, the approval of which is now being litigated.
The LPC also took up the proposals by Rudin Management for the St. Vincent’s “East Campus,” to convert four existing St. Vincent’s hospital buildings to condos and demolish another four and replace them with new construction. The LPC called the proposed new tower on 7th Avenue (now 233 ft.; formerly 265 ft.) too tall, criticized the proposed removal of historic details from some of the buildings which are to be saved and re-used, and called for a re-design of the proposed new townhouses on 11th Street — all criticisms consistent with those GVSHP has raised. The LPC directed Rudin to come back with design changes which address these issues, though no next meeting date has yet been set.
The LPC did not, however, reconsider its approval of demolition of the Reiss Building or the proposed insertion into the existing buildings on 12th Street of storefront picture windows — issues GVSHP had also raised. See the coverage in the New York Times and the New York Post.
Any plan approved by the LPC would still require the approval of the City Council and the City Planning Commission.
