Asking Borough President Stringer for NYU Public Hearing

NYU 2031 PlanGVSHP, fellow community groups, NYU faculty and students have written to Borough President Stringer, urging him to hold a public hearing on NYU’s Village expansion plan application before he issues his recommendations on the plan.  Read the letter HERE.

NYU is applying for zoning changes, alienation of public land, and overturning of urban renewal deed restrictions to allow the addition 2.5 million sq. ft. of space – the equivalent of the Empire State Building – south of Washington Square Park.  Community leaders in Lower Manhattan have urged NYU to consider the Financial District as an alternative for their growth.  Thousands have rallied, signed petitions, written, called, and turned up at public hearings to call for the plan to be rejected.  An increasing number of NYU faculty and students are joining that call.

Borough President Stringer has 30 days to issue his recommendations.  Given the enormous public concern about this plan and the tremendous impact it would have, we hope the Borough President will hold a hearing, allowing the public to speak to him directly, before making a decision and issuing his recommendations.  While those recommendations are advisory, they can have an enormously influential impact on the process and final decisions by the City Council and City Planning Commission.
