LPC Public Meeting on New Hospital
On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission met to discuss the current proposal for a new St.  Vincent’s Hospital on the site of the O’Toole Building (pictured right; click here for detailed images and information).
The Commission was sharply divided, with a clear majority of members expressing deep criticisms of the new hospital plan, and several saying that more realistic views of the proposed building and its actual visual impact must be provided — a call GVSHP has also long made. There was also continued disagreement about the recent finding of a “hardship” in this case, with some Commissioners saying that the hardship finding was made without proper information, and that the extent of its applicability had not been made clear at the time of the vote. GVSHP had asked that the public be allowed to provide testimony on the hospital plan now that the hardship application has been approved, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission has officially closed the public comment period regarding the St. Vincent’s and Rudin applications. Nonetheless, the LPC does closely monitor its comment line, so anyone wishing to contact the LPC with their concerns about the new hospital plan can write to:

No decisions were made regarding the new hospital application. Additionally, no decisions have yet been made by the Commission regarding the Rudin East Campus proposal. Any plan approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission must then get zoning changes, which will require a new round of public hearings and votes of approval by the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and the City Council.
No date has yet been given for the next LPC meeting regarding the hospital proposal, but we will let you know as soon it is.
